What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a medical specialty and type of oral surgery that diagnoses and treats diseases and injuries to the face, mouth, jaw, and neck. It’s a bridge between traditional medicine and dentistry. At Dublin Corners Dental, we are proud to offer oral and maxillofacial surgery with our highly trained team of dental surgeons.

This medical specialty can address many different concerns, with everything from tooth extractions to jaw fractures to dental infections and pain. No matter your issues, our team will ensure you can get back to living a full life.

Who is a Good Candidate for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

Whether you are a good candidate for oral and maxillofacial surgery primarily depends on the concerns you’re struggling with. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is likely the right solution for you if you are dealing with any of the following:

  • Facial pain
  • Broken jaws
  • Congenital facial abnormalities
  • Facial fractures
  • Jaw cysts and tumors
  • Protrusion of the jaw
  • TMJ disorders
  • Sleep disorders

What to Expect From Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

At Dublin Corners Dental, we offer a couple of different oral and maxillofacial surgery options. The main surgery options we provide include bone grafting and dental implants. No matter what type of surgery you’re having done, to start, we will administer general anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

Bone Grafting

With bone grafting, we’ll take bone from another area of your body or use donor bone. That bone will then be placed in the treatment area and secured in place. Over time, it will fuse with the rest of your bone. When everything is healed, no one will ever be able to tell you had surgery at all.

Dental Implants

For dental and maxillofacial implants, we’ll first place the implant into place and allow it to fuse with the jawbone. An abutment will then be attached along with a crown to ensure your smile is perfect.
