What is Gum Graft Surgery?

Gum graft surgery is a type of dental surgery that is designed to treat gum recession (where the gums pull away from the teeth and reveal the roots) and thinning gums. When the roots are exposed, there is an increased risk of tooth decay, bone loss, and sensitivity. The gum graft procedure replaces the lost gum tissue and improves your overall oral health.

The gum graft tissue is typically taken from the roof of your mouth, but healthy gum tissue from a donor can be used as well.

Who is a Good Candidate for Gum Graft Surgery?

If you have thinning gums or gum recession, you are likely a perfect candidate for a gum graft. We also recommend that you be in good overall health and a nonsmoker.

Receding gums can often be a sign of gum disease, but some patients are simply genetically prone to have thinner gums. Brushing too aggressively can also lead to gum recession. Whatever the reason for your receding gums, our team will ensure you receive the right treatment.

What to Expect from the Gum Grafting Procedure

To start your gum graft surgery, we’ll begin by administering local anesthesia to numb the teeth and gums in the treatment area. Sedation is also an option for all our patients.  From there, we will make a small incision and create a small flap in the gums and clean the roots of the teeth. Next, your surgeon will make an incision in the roof of the mouth and remove a small wedge of tissue to be used as the gum tissue graft.

The tissue will then be moved to the area of gum recession and sutured into place. Finally, all incisions will be closed, and you’ll be ready to start the recovery process. The whole procedure can take 1-2 hours.

After your surgery, you will have gauze and dressings. The gauze can be removed after 30 minutes. You’ll need to attend all your follow-up appointments to ensure you’re healing properly. We will also give you detailed post-op instructions. Recovery takes about 1-2 weeks in total.
