At Dublin Corners Dental, we are proud to offer numerous dental sedation options to patients in and around Livermore. Whether you have anxiety or are going through a complex surgery, like dental implants, that requires you to be relaxed, our team will ensure you can feel comfortable when you come to us for all your dental needs.
Dental sedation comes in many forms, but no matter what form is used or what you prefer, it’s designed to make you more comfortable during dental procedures. Whether to relieve pain, calm anxiety, and help you fully relax, dental sedation can make dental treatments so much easier. Which type of dental sedation is right for you will depend on the procedure you’re having done, your unique needs, and what our dental team recommends.
Almost all our patients are good candidates for dental sedation. If you are looking to relieve pain, experience dental anxiety, have a strong gag reflex, or are set to have a lengthy procedure, you are likely an ideal candidate for dental sedation.
Patients who are pregnant, have certain medical conditions, are on specific medication, or have had an allergic reaction to anesthesia in the past are typically not good candidates for dental sedation.
At Dublin Corners Dental, we offer three different options for dental sedation: nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. Your dental professional will help you choose the best option for your needs.
Nitrous oxide, often referred to as laughing gas, is a very popular form of moderate sedation for dental procedures. It’s administered using a small mask that is placed over the nose. The nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and allows you to calm yourself as you breathe it in.
The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly once the mask is taken off, allowing you to get back to your normal routine immediately.
Oral sedation is a prescription medication that is taken before your dental appointment to ensure it has enough time to kick in. Once it starts working, you will fall into a deep state of relaxation, allowing you to be comfortable throughout your procedure. Unlike some forms of general anesthesia, you will remain conscious while on oral sedation, ensuring you can follow your provider’s instructions.
For those who need deeper sedation, intravenous sedation (also called conscious sedation) is likely the perfect option. It’s administered through a thin needle placed into a vein (usually in the arm). You will remain conscious enough to respond to your dental team, but you may go in and out of consciousness. This is used most often for complex procedures and for those with severe anxiety.
