Pleasanton is a city located in Alameda County, CA and has a population of around 75,000 residents. The city is considered a suburb of the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, but has a lively downtown area filled with a diverse range of restaurants, high-end boutiques, and specialty businesses. It’s also home to the United States’ oldest one-mile horse track, the Pleasanton Race Track, Museum on Main, and the Alameda County Fair. It’s also where you can find a variety of parks, trails, and natural habitats.
Gum graft surgery is a dental procedure designed to treat thinning gums or gum recession. Exposed teeth roots increase the risk of tooth decay, sensitivity, and bone loss around the teeth, but gum graft surgery can reduce those risks significantly.
But why does gum recession happen in the first place? It can be caused by brushing too hard, grinding or clenching teeth, and using tobacco products.
Gum grafting covers exposed teeth roots and adds volume to your gum line, improving overall oral health and reducing your risk of severe gum disease. The graft is typically taken from the tissue on the roof of the mouth and is moved to the treatment area.
If your gums are receding, your dentist will likely recommend a gum tissue graft. We also recommend you be in good overall health, be a nonsmoker, aren’t on certain medications, and are struggling with tooth sensitivity and/or aesthetic concerns.
To start your gum graft surgery, we’ll begin by administering local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation may be an option as well. From there, your periodontist will make an incision to create a small flap in the gum. They’ll then clean the roots of your teeth.
Next, your surgeon will create another incision in the roof of your mouth (usually) and remove a wedge of the inner tissue. The site will be closed with sutures and then the gum graft will be placed over your exposed tooth roots. Sutures will be put in place to hold the gum graft in place. The whole procedure takes about 1-2 hours.
After your procedure, you’ll be able to go home shortly after. In the first few weeks, you’ll want to eat soft, cold foods and avoid anything that’s hard or hot that could damage or irritate the graft. Your periodontist will also likely recommend an antimicrobial mouthwash to prevent infections and plaque buildup. You may also need to avoid brushing and flossing until your surgeon says it’s safe.
