About Pleasanton

Pleasanton is a city in Alameda County, California and is considered a suburb in the East Bay region of San Francisco. The city has a population of almost 75,000 residents and consists of a thriving community filled with a diverse range of people of different backgrounds. It’s well-known for being the home of the oldest one-mile racetrack in the United States, the Alameda County Fair, and the Pleasanton Farmers’ Market. You can also find a variety of shopping, fine dining, and entertainment opportunities.

What is Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation is just what it sounds like. Dental sedation allows you to relax and be stress-free during any dental procedure. At Dublin Corners Dental, we offer a number of different dental sedation options to ensure all our patients receive the comfort they deserve. We offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and IV sedation. Which one is right for you will depend on the procedure you’re having done and what you’re most comfortable with.

Our skilled team of dentists will work with you to determine the best sedation method for your needs.

Who is a Good Candidate for Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation is appropriate for almost all our patients who are seeking to be comfortable and relaxed during a dental procedure. As long as you don’t have any medical conditions that would counteract with sedation, you are likely a good candidate for dental sedation.

If you have anxiety, a low pain threshold, or a strong gag reflex, dental sedation is a perfect solution. That said, we typically do not recommend dental sedation for patients who are pregnant.

The Dental Sedation Process

How your dental sedation is administered will depend on the type of sedation you’re having. Nitrous oxide is delivered in a different manner than oral sedation or IV sedation. No matter which sedation method you receive, we’ll walk you through each step of the process to ensure you’re informed every step of the way.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (widely known as laughing gas) is administered through a small mask that is placed over the nose. You breathe in the nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen, and it puts you in a relaxed state throughout your procedure. Because the effects fade rapidly once the mask is removed, you can easily go back to your normal routine (including driving) immediately.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a simple prescription medication that is taken by mouth. It’s generally taken before your dental appointment to ensure there is enough time for it to take effect. The medication puts you in a state of deep relaxation, ensuring you’re calm and comfortable throughout your procedure. You will likely need someone to drive you home afterward.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is typically the deepest form of dental sedation. It’s administered by inserting a small needle into a vein. This allows the medication to go directly into your bloodstream and allows for a deep state of relaxation. This form of sedation is perfect for patients with severe dental anxiety. You will be conscious enough to respond to verbal cues but won’t feel anything. You will need a friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure.
