What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is another name for gum disease and is classified by inflammation and infection in the gum area and in the bones that support your teeth. The condition can be caused by plaque buildup, and some of the risk factors for the disease include poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, and even stress. Genetics can also play a factor, as some patients develop periodontal disease even when practicing proper brushing and flossing.

As periodontal disease progresses, it can become more difficult to treat. There are four different stages of periodontal disease, including:

  • Gingivitis: Involves red, puffy gums that bleed when you brush or floss. At this stage, treatment can completely reverse the condition.
  • Mild periodontitis: The bacteria have seeped into the gums and are affecting the underlying bone. The gums may pull away from the teeth and create pockets around the teeth and gums. Bacteria and plaque can get stuck in these pockets.
  • Moderate periodontitis: At this stage, the bacteria have started to eat away at the soft tissues and bone, and you may start to experience pain, bad breath, and even pus.
  • Advanced periodontitis/severe periodontal disease: Bone loss continues at this stage, and tooth loss begins.

Who is a Good Candidate for Periodontal Disease Treatment?

Anyone struggling with any stage of periodontal or gum disease is a good candidate for periodontal disease treatment. This is especially the case if you’re experiencing pain, bleeding gums, red or purplish gum tissue, soreness, receding gums, or bad breath. To determine the right treatment for you, we recommend coming into Dublin Corners Dental for a comprehensive consultation.

Periodontal and Gum Disease Treatment Options

At Dublin Corners Dental, we offer scaling and root planing for mild to moderate periodontal disease. The scaling and root planing treatment involves your dental hygienist removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the gum line and then smoothing the areas around the gums to prevent bacteria from returning.

For more advanced periodontal disease, we typically recommend tissue grafting, bone grafting, or periodontal surgery. With these treatments, we take tissue or bone from another area of your body or mouth and secure it into place to improve your oral health.

After your treatment, we’ll give you detailed aftercare instructions on the best ways to take care of the treatment area and prevent periodontal disease in the future.
