hot chocolate blanket snow

After spending time in the freezing outdoors, it’s nice to come inside and warm up with a hot beverage. If you’re worried about how your teeth will fare, though, don’t grab the hot cocoa. Try one of these other warm drinks instead for something that is sure to be more nice than naughty.

Green or Black Tea

Tea contains high levels of fluoride to aid in the protection of tooth enamel. It also contains bioactive compounds, which act as an antibacterial agent in your mouth. The benefits of drinking tea will be discounted if cream or sugar is added, though; best to enjoy your cup plain.

Coffee

Coffee breaks down bacteria that causes plaque. According to a study done at Rio de Janeiro’s Federal University, polyphenol antioxidants in coffee were responsible for stopping the bacteria placed on donated baby teeth from harming the enamel. Again, adding any sweeteners will negate the positive effects coffee can have. In addition, coffee is notorious for staining teeth, so we advise a limit of two cups a day.

Warm Milk

Not everyone will go for a glass of warm milk, unless, of course, it also has chocolate in it. But milk and dairy products have been shown to contain proteins called caseins, which fuse to leave a protective layer on your teeth. The American Dental Association advises that if you are going to indulge in some winter sweets, it’s best to eat them first and wash them down with a glass of milk.

Enjoying a warm drink is a treat in the winter, especially when it’s also good for your teeth. As always, it’s important to brush and floss after every meal to ensure that your teeth stay as healthy as possible. And don’t forget to keep up with your regular exams and cleanings; call Dublin Corners Dental at 925-875-9292 to schedule an appointment.
