Dental pain is never fun. Whether it’s from an untreated cavity or a recent oral surgery, no one likes to feel discomfort.

Here are some home dental remedies that can help alleviate your discomfort in the short-term. Remember, if you’re experiencing pain and you don’t know why, it’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible.

Warm Salt Water Rinse

Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water is a great and easy way to soothe your mouth while cleaning it. Dissolve one teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water, and swish it around your mouth. Do this three or four times a day as needed. It’s totally safe, just don’t swallow the saltwater!

But remember, this is only a short-term treatment and will not help heal your mouth long-term.

Ice Packs

Use ice packs to numb your mouth. These don’t need to be fancy store-bought ice packs, either. Just put five to ten ice cubes in a small plastic baggie, seal the bag, wrap a towel around the bag, and place the ice on your face where it hurts.

Peppermint Tea Bags

Many people swear by peppermint tea bags. One reason is that mint is often used as a calming agent. To use, wet a tea bag and apply it to the painful area, or freeze it and put it on the tooth. Keep it on for 20 minutes. This is a safe method for temporarily relieving pain.

Acupressure

Acupressure is an increasingly popular way to naturally alleviate pain. Many people find that by touching special pressure points in the body that are associated with the mouth, they can decrease their discomfort. These pressure points include the skin behind your outer ankle bone, and where your thumb and index finger meet on the back of your hand. Some spots mandate pressure for one minute, and some for ten minutes or more. Before using acupressure, it’s important to research it further to make sure you’re doing it correctly.

Remember, none of these methods for pain relief are long-term solutions, but they can help you manage you pain while you fully recover. If you’re experiencing dental pain and need to speak to a dentist, contact our team to get professional help.
