Dark-haired man folds his arms and smiles in a field of wheat by a forest of trees on a sunny day

You’ve probably heard of dental veneers. But do you know what they actually are? If you’ve ever wondered about this life-changing dental procedure, you’ve come to the right place. Read on to get all your dental veneers questions answered.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin shells attached to your teeth that improve the appearance of your smile. They are made from ceramic or porcelain, and they look healthy and natural.

Who Needs Dental Veneers?

There are many reasons to get veneers. Here are the three biggest:

1. Broken Teeth

Teeth can become cracked or chipped for any number of reasons, from dental trauma to pressure from biting. No one wants teeth with cracks or chips in them— it can be unsightly! Dental veneers eliminate the problem of chipped or cracked teeth.

2. Crowded Teeth or Gap in Teeth

It’s very common for people to have either crowded teeth, where there are too many teeth vying for the same space, or a gap in their teeth. You can probably think of a handful of people off the top of your head who suffer from either one or the other of these issues. Dental veneers can solve both of these problems and leave your mouth looking beautiful.

3. Stained Teeth

People can get stained teeth from many different sources, like coffee, tea, and wine. Besides beverages, certain foods and medications can also discolor teeth. If you’re looking for whiter teeth, this could be the perfect time for dental veneers.

How Do I Get Veneers?

If your dentist decides that dental veneers are right for you, they will walk you through the process step by step. First, they will take X-rays and dental impressions of your teeth. Your dentist will prep your teeth by removing a very thin layer of enamel from the surface of each tooth, so the veneer has room to be placed. Then a temporary veneer will be applied to the teeth to protect them while your measurements are sent away to a lab where you permanent veneers will be crafted. Once they are ready, the veneers are bonded to your teeth and the material is hardened with a UV light. The result? A picture-perfect and natural-looking smile.
