About Dublin, CA

Dublin is a suburb of the East Bay in northern California and is located in the Amador Valley within Alameda County’s Tri-Valley region. It has a population of around 70,500 people. It’s considered part of the crossroads of the San Francisco Bay Area because it’s at the intersection of two major interstates. It’s also one of the fastest-growing and wealthiest suburbs in the area and boasts a rich history that can be found at Dublin Heritage Park and Museums. It’s also home to a number of open spaces and parks (over 800 acres), including the Iron Horse Regional Trail, Emerald Glen Park,  and the Dublin Hills Regional Park.

What is Gum Graft Surgery?

Gum grafting surgery, also called tissue grafting, is a type of dental surgery that is meant to restore gum tissue where some has receded or been lost completely. It’s often done when the gums have receded enough that the roots of the teeth are exposed. With this exposure, your risk of tooth decay increases significantly, as does your tooth sensitivity and chances for bone loss.

Replacing the gum tissue with tissue or grafts from another area in the mouth, synthetic material, or tissue-regenerating proteins allows for new tissue growth and for your overall oral health to improve.

Gum grafting can also be combined with bone grafting and/or dental implants. It all depends on your needs.

Who is a Good Candidate for Gum Graft Surgery?

If you’re struggling with gum recession, gum disease/periodontal disease, or simply want to enhance and balance the symmetry of your gum line, gum grafting may be the perfect solution for you. Beyond that, we recommend you be in good overall health, be willing to stick to a good oral hygiene routine, be a nonsmoker, have thin gum tissue, and be struggling with tooth sensitivity.

What to Expect from the Gum Grafting Procedure

To start your gum graft surgical process, you’ll first come into our office for an initial consultation. During this appointment, your surgeon will examine your gums and assess your oral health. We will also discuss your goals, overall concerns, and determine if this is the right procedure for you. We’ll build a customized treatment plan for you.

From there, we will select the best grafting material for you. This could include connective tissue grafts, free gingival grafts, or tissue-stimulating proteins. Next, using state-of-the-art techniques, your periodontist will take the donor tissue and carefully place it over the treatment area. It will be secured in place. You will be given oral sedation/local anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable throughout this process.

Once this oral surgery is done, the graft will naturally fuse into place over time, ensuring you not only improve the appearance of your gum but also your overall periodontal health. It can take several months to a year for your graft to fully strengthen.
