May 31, 2016 | Dental Implants,

It is very normal to feel hesitant or anxious when having to undergo dental surgery. Dental implants are a very common surgery and can be done pain-free under local anesthesia. If you are in overall good health and you have enough bone structure to support an implant, you are considered an ideal candidate for dental implant surgery.

To ensure that you do not feel discomfort or pain, you are provided with adequate amounts of anesthesia prior to surgery. You may also opt for gentle sedation which is both safe and effective.

1. After administration of local anesthesia, the implant, either titanium or zirconia (ceramic), is placed into the jaw bone. The implant looks much like a screw or cylinder, which allows it to securely attach to surrounding bone and tissue.

2. Once the implant is set, a temporary crown is placed over the area as it heals. Allowing two to six months’ healing time will give the bone and implant sufficient time to bond and form a solid anchor for your new, permanent crown.

3. When the site has completely healed, a permanent crown is placed on the area and attached to a metal post, called an abutment.

These are the steps for a typical dental implant procedure. There may be slight variances depending on your unique situation. Dr. Shaghasi will guide you toward the best treatment plan for your case.
